Efficient Primary Grinding with Controlled Product Size
MPE Rod Mills are mainly used for primary grinding of crushed ore, handling feed sizes up to 50 mm for soft materials and between 20–30 mm for harder materials, where a narrow product size distribution is required (e.g., for subsequent gravity separation). Rod Mills produce a coarser product than Ball Mills and typically operate at slower speeds. They are available in both wet and dry designs.
The tumbling and rolling action of the rods applies most of the crushing force to the coarse fractions of the feed material, with a lesser degree of force on the finer material filling the interstices of the rod charge.
The horizontal progression of material through the mill is slower compared to the movement caused by the rods and mill rotation. Each particle is subjected to grinding action equivalent to passing through multiple sets of rolls in series before discharge. As a result, the Rod Mill can efficiently reduce 1” feed size to 10 mesh or finer in open circuit operation.
MPE also offers a Laboratory Model Rod Mill, mounted on an ‘A’-frame for easy charging and discharging. The mill can be operated in both inclined and vertical positions. When run vertically, discharge is simplified and cleaning is quicker. The unit is driven through a worm and worm wheel mechanism and uses roller thrust and ball bearings throughout for smooth operation.
The complete unit comes equipped with a ½ h.p. motor drive, with an optional electronic preset counter available.
Rod Mills accept feed up to 50 mm (2 in.) and produce a product in the size range of 75 mesh.
Customs built designs are also available.
