Heavy Media Separation (HMS) is a proven density separation process widely used in the mining, mineral, and recycling industries. MPE’s Heavy Media Separation Equipment is engineered for precision beneficiation, utilizing the sink-float principle to separate particles based on their specific gravities (ranging from 2.0 to 4.5).
Modern dense media plants employ a suspension of ferrosilicon powder (relative density 6.7–7.1 with 13–16% silicon) in water, creating an artificial heavy liquid for effective separation. Particles with higher specific gravity sink, while lighter particles float, ensuring a clean and efficient separation.
